LawPort was developed in 1999 by the San Francisco based company SV Technology, Inc., which was formed to address the emerging demand for knowledge management products and services within the legal sector. Knowledge management is the gathering, classifying, organization and dissemination of data and information that is critical to decision making and growth within a company. KM can be further defined as the process of making intangible intellectual capital (which can often be difficult to share) accessible to all stakeholders. Knowledge management has become a strategic imperative for law firms, most especially because it is a critical source of competitive advantage.

LawPort has become the legal industry's leading Web foundation, portal and knowledge management applications suite, with implementations at . At its core, LawPort provides a complete Web infrastructure, integrating Intranet, Extranet and Internet sites to unleash and organize critical information previously locked in the firm's back office systems. In 2007 the company was purchased by SydneyPLUS International, a leading developer of KM solutions for the world’s top law firms, as well as for numerous Fortune 1000 companies. The LawPort KM suite continues under the name of SydneyPLUS | LawPort.

The initial version of the product, was released in 1999 and over the years was further developed to suit the changing needs of agile law firms. In 2007 the award-winning portal was redesigned, leveraging the robust legal sector experience and sophisticated R&D capabilities of SydneyPLUS, and is now in its fifth enhanced release as LawPort 5.0 , designed to be fully compatible with SharePoint.
